Helping stop DWI

Janice Thomas' son Frank was killed by a drunk driver.

On Saturday, December 4, Ms. Thomas stood on Route 9J in Castleton handing out flyers to passersby reminding them that Drunk Driving is the most preventable cause of death.  With the smallest effort the devastation of the senseless loss of a loved one could be avoided.

The literature handed to drivers simply stated that "Drunk Driving is Never Serious, until it becomes serious."

Everyone can help prevent injury or death:
  • Always use a designated driver
  • Plan to stay the night
  • Call a cab
  • Call someone for a ride
  • Take the keys away if someone is drunk
To support the cause, County Executive Kathy Jimino,  Rensselaer County Legislator, Alexander Shannon joined the group to spread the word.

"We're here to remind people that they shouldn't be drinking and driving," said Ms. Jimino. "There are a lot of victims' family members here and they bear the horrible scars of what can happen when you drink and drive. So, we want everyone to be safe and enjoy the holiday season."

Standing with Ms.Thomas were Rensselaer County Sheriff Deputy Jamie Smith and Deputy John Panichi, Dan Gardner from the Castleton Ambulance, Frances Giroux.

The Dikant family of Schodack have long been advocates for the cause. Three members of the Dikant family were killed on Route 9J after the driver of another car crossed the double line, hitting their car head-on.

On the back of the hand-out was a list of victims and a photo of the Rensselaer County DWI Victims Memorial. Also quotes from the DWI Victim Impact Panel Survey and a copy of this simple pledge:

  • I will pledge to my loved ones that I will not operate a motor vehicle if, at any time,'I indulge in alcoholic beverages.
  • I will be sure to have a designated driver, call for a taxi, take a bus or call home for a ride.
  • If at all possible, I will pre-arrange to stay at the residence at which I am partying.
