Artists or Athletes?

Are modified sports more important than music and art? These are some of the tough questions facing our Board of Education as they wade knee-deep into the school's budget season.

Art or Athletics - Who can decide? To make a choice like that, I suppose it depends on your child's passion.

The sports programs in Schodack are outstanding, yielding our community several championship season in soccer and basketball. Fostering a sense of community to rival Notre Dame football fans! Wildcats rule, there is no doubt about the pride we all felt when the Basketball team made it to the very end of the season last year with an outstanding record of wins.
Not to mention the volleyball and tennis teams, cross country and wrestling! Athletics are very important at Maple Hill.

But students who are passionate about music and art, do pretty well too...

Erik Laurin and Caitlin Smith, successfully auditioned with the Empire State Youth Orchestra and  performed at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York with the Youth Orchestra on Saturday, May 22.
After earning a perfect score at his audition, Erik Laurin performed with the top student musicians in the state at the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference.

Alec Hicks was selected to perform with the Empire State Youth Chorale for this year’s Melodies of Christmas at Proctor's.

In 2010, 16 MHHS students were chosen to participate in the 11th Annual High School Regional Art Exhibit which will be displayed at Proctor’s Theatre.  Even CES can be  proud of their published writers and artists.

Who's to say which is more vital to the youth of our schools.  The outstanding musicians and artists don't have trophy cases or cheerleaders and there are no road signs touting their accomplishments, but for a school the size of Schodack, The Empire State Youth Orchestra, Proctor's Art Exhibit and Carnegie Hall? That's a pretty big deal.
