Olympics conflict moves Giants’ preseason opener off WNYT
WNYT (NBC-13) again will pick up the New York Giants
preseason TV package, but there are only two games on that schedule
this season, and one of which will be relegated to a secondary channel.
The exhibition opener is Friday, Aug. 10 — while the Giants are still
in training camp at the University at Albany — at Jacksonville, but
WNYT is committed to showing NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics. So
the game telecast will be moved to digital station 13.2, also known as
“Me-TV,” in standard definition.
“The Olympics are the Big Kahuna,” WNYT
vice president/general manager Steve Baboulis said. “The good news is,
we have the flexibility to run those games somewhere else for the fans
who want to see it.”
The Giants’ second game is Saturday, Aug. 18, the annual matchup with
the New York Jets, who, as the home team for this season’s game, own
the TV rights. The NFL Network (still not available on Time Warner Cable) will pick up the Jets feed, which should be available to Capital Region viewers who receive the network
Game 3 is Friday, Aug. 24, against the Chicago Bears, a telecast distributed nationally by CBS.
The Giants’ preseason finale is Wednesday, Aug. 29 — their regular-season opener is a week later, also on a Wednesday
— against the New England Patriots. WNYT will have that game, as will
the NFL Network, whose telecast may be blacked out locally.
The Giants’ preseason schedule:
- Friday, Aug. 10: at Jacksonville, 7:30 p.m. (WNYT-13.2 — “Me-TV”)
- Saturday, Aug. 18: at N.Y. Jets, 7 p.m. (NFL Network)
- Friday, Aug. 24: vs. Chicago, 8 p.m. (CBS-6)
- Wednesday, Aug. 29: vs. New England, 7:30 p.m. (WNYT-13; NFL Network)
