Heather G. McGovern participates in SUNY Oswego Global Lab Summer, 2013

Heather G. McGovern of Castleton, a student at SUNY Oswego, was among nearly 60 college and university students taking part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego's Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world this summer.
McGovern, a junior in biology, is conducting research at the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil. She is the daughter of Patrick and Karen McGovern of Castleton. After earning her undergraduate degree, she plans to attend medical school.

The 56 students are scattered among research institutions in Brazil, Congo, Costa Rica, France, India and Taiwan. The home campus for most of the Global Lab students is SUNY Oswego, with others from the SUNY centers at Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, the SUNY College at Geneseo and private institutions.

Research projects for SUNY students this year include puma conservation in Brazil, bioprospecting in Costa Rica, investigating medicinal plants used to treat diabetes in Congo, studying medical decision support systems, variable stars, and more.
Funding to help support the students' research experience abroad comes from a variety of sources, including external grantors such as Banco Santander and the National Science Foundation, the student's home campus (including private donations) and the international partner campus.
