Governor Paterson to Join STRIDE Adaptive Sports’ Honorary Board of Directors

(Albany, NY) –With the 2014 Paralympic games underway in Sochi Russia, America is inspired by people with physical disabilities and their accomplishments. That is why STRIDE Adaptive Sports, an official Paralympic sports club of Albany NY is excited to announce the newest member to their honorary board of directors, former New York State Governor David Paterson. Governor Paterson served as the 55th governor of New York from 2008 – 2010, and was the first African American Governor of New York and the second legally blind Governor of any U.S. state. Since leaving office, Paterson has been working as a radio talk show host on station WOR in New York City. David Paterson continues to inspire us in his career achievements despite being blind.

Prior to serving as Governor of New York, Paterson received a B.A. in History from Columbia University in 1977 and later graduated from Hofstra Law School. After law school, Patterson worked in the District attorney’s office of Queens County, NY. He also served on the staff of Manhattan Borough President David Dinkins. In 1985, he was elected to the New York State Senate. Upon his election, he became the youngest State Senator in Albany. He won the seat again in 1986 for a full term representing the 29th District in the New York State Senate and served as senator until assuming office of Lieutenant Governor on January 1, 2007. Paterson was elected by the Democratic caucus of the Senate as Minority Leader on November 20, 2002, becoming the first non-white state legislative leader and highest-ranking black elected official in the history of New York State. Paterson became known for his consensus-building style coupled with sharp political skills.
‘Having a disability should not disqualify anyone from having access to anything life has to offer, including sports”, said Paterson. “ That is why I support STRIDE.  They have a proven track record of making sure individuals with disabilities in New York, especially the youth and veteran population have ample opportunities in many types of activities that help them lead full and active lifestyles.”
As a person who knows what it is like to rise to the challenge of conquering a disability, Governor Paterson will be an excellent addition to the STRIDE Adaptive Sports Honorary Board representing the community of visually impaired athletes.
