Castleton
Even while they re-elected Village Justice Paul Peter, Castleton voters decided to abolish the village court and the justice seat. By April 1, the functions will be taken over by the town of Schodack.
The court has been running in the red for years, and closing it will end an annual deficit of $5,000 to $10,000, village officials have said.
The court handles about five traffic tickets a week. While village court will be extinct, Peter will still hear village cases as a Schodack town justice. He's served on the town bench since 1992.
The proposition to abolish the court passed, 71-34. Mayor Joseph Keegan and trustees Marianne Carner and Jenifer Pratico were unopposed for re-election.
"No one will lose their job," Keegan said.
