EASTWYCK VILLAGE SETS EIGHT-WEEK FALL PREVENTION PROGRAM:
Award-Winning “Matter of Balance” Sessions to Run 9/11-10/30

ALBANY, NY (July 28, 2014) — According to studies published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three seniors ages 65 and older will fall each year, a statistic that continues to alarm health care professionals.

Eastwyck Village, an independent senior living community in North Greenbush (1720 Best Road), will host an eight-week “Matter of Balance” workshop designed to improve balance and flexibility and increase the activity levels of those who have fears or concerns about falls or maintaining balance.

Taught by facilitators from the University at Albany’s Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness, the award-winning, two-hour peer-led workshop is based on Boston University’s Fear of Falling program. Sessions will be held Thursdays from Sept. 11 through Oct. 30. from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Matter of Balance is free to Eastwyck Village residents and $25 for non-residents.

“Matter of Balance is tailored to those who are concerned about falls, have sustained a fall in the past or restrict activities because of concerns about falling,” said Adam DeSantis, director of community relations at Eastwyck Village. “Those interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength or are age 60 or older, mobile and able to problem-solve are also ideal participants.

“Each week instructors will utilize a variety of activities to address physical, social, and cognitive factors affecting fear of falling and to learn fall prevention strategies,” he added. “Activities include group discussion, problem-solving, skill building, assertiveness training, videotapes and sharing practical solutions.”

Participants will also learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity and change their environment to reduce fall riskfactors.
