Gay marriage bill gains support in State Senate

Cuomo noted that 60-percent of New Yorkers support gay marriage, urging holdouts in the Senate, to join them.

At a press conference Monday, Cuomo introducing three new members on the 'team.' Senators Carl Kruger, Shirley Huntley and Joseph Addabbo said now that their constituents support gay marriage, they will too. That brought the tally of supporters - all Democrats - to 29 votes. But supporters aren't celebrating yet.
Three more votes are needed for a majority in the Senate, and none of the 32 Republicans are jumping on board.

For months, Governor Cuomo has said layoffs of up to 9,800 state workers could result if he doesn't get $450 million in workforce savings for the current fiscal year.

The state's two major unions, the Public Employees Federation and Civil Service Employees Association, are in contract talks with the governor's representatives, although the two sides appear far from an agreement. The unions' contracts expired at the end of March.
