Stop the Dollar Tree?

Petition to stop the Dollar Tree in Schodack
https://www.facebook.com/events/181008978664083/

Conclusion: As our elected officials it is our hope that you will act in our best interest to protect our community where we live and pay taxes, and that your decisions will be independent of other influences or pressure from Rensselaer County and/or the State of NY.

Are you for or against this project?  Why?

  1. I am for the Dollar Tree warehouse as I'm tired of our business corridor being populated by empty commercial space (Old Town Hall/Holy Cow etc.etc.) We need a spark to our Town's growth and rather than wait another generation for enough housing to be built for business' to feel comfortable coming to Schodack, this project will be the spark to bring business to Town - maybe even a grocery store!!

  2. I agree! We need more business in Schodack, for the services we receive from the town, our taxes are far too high! Business increases the tax base and allows the town to provide more services to residents. I do not understand the folks complaining to the newspaper that Schodack has "high traffic congestion" Where? When I first moved here, folks were screaming about the warehouses on Route 9 and the horrible effect it would have on our quality of life and the awful congestion that would result. Has anybody noticed these problems? I hope we can stop the knee-jerk reaction that all development is "bad". Some is good!

  3. I think you are failing to see the agenda. The people fighting this fight against the Town and Dollar Tree are NOT trying to stop the development of the distribution center. They are trying to get the Town and Dollar Tree to find an alternate location for such a massive project. The site in which they want to build would potentially devastate the enviornment and Schodacks vital underground aquifer. Plus, whatever "tax benefits" the town gets for this project would be cancelled out by the cost to rebuild and maintain the roads from an influx of 200+ trucks per day on our roads. As well as the cut in state aid for our schools. And before you start with "jobs"...read this article and tell me if THIS is the kind of work you want brought into our town...http://burblife.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/the-almighty-dollar-tree/. No one fighting this battle is doing it based on "knee-jerk" reactions. They are educated residents and have done their research..not only on the Town, but into Dollar Tree as a company, as well. You are right...not all development is "bad", but we, as Schodack residents, deserve MUCH better than THIS!

  4. Schodack is starving for tax revenue- and there haven't been tons of businesses clamoring to locate here. Residents need tax relief and that will only come from commercial business. Even with a pilot program, it will still bring in more $$ than it currently collects for the property. For those suggesting this isn't the right place in Schodack, I ask, what is the right place? No matter the location, it will affect someone's property. My concern is mainly asethetic- how will it look? As the land is now, one cannot see "into" the property much from the road. I'd like to see every effort made to ensure the property is pleasing to the eye- or hidden behind evergreens. Schodack needs business, people need jobs- I support the Dollar Tree project.

  5. You sound like an informed resident...and as an informed resident, you should have read the Town's Master Plan? In there, you will have read that the TOWN designated the southernmost point of the Route 9 corridor as the ideal location for such a project. There is plenty of commercial real estate in that area that would more than accommodate these large scale plans, with little to no residential impact. I suggest you do your research to get a good idea on just how devastating this will be for the Town and it's residents! As for visual asethetics...anyone with a brain knows that when a project starts pressing the build-out budget, things get cut from the plans...and that is usually the "asethetic" budget. Want proof...look at the Hannaford warehouse. You were not suppose to be able to see that building from the Rt.9. See how those plans fell through? Dollar Tree ranks one of the worst companies with Green initiatives in this country. What makes you think they will be environmentally friendly here in OUR town!?

  6. For the 12/29, 3:26pm comment- "Anyone with a brain..." I'll steer clear of commenting further on this topic. Always nice to know folks can civillly discuss topics in the town of Schodack without bashing those with a different opinion!

  7. REALLY SICK OF ALL THE NIMBY'S (NOT IN MY BACK YARD) WHEN THEIR BACKYARD WAS SPECIFICALLY ZONED FOR COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT!!!!!! For all of you living on Julianne/Richmond, what did you think commercial development was when you moved in? or did you even think about that at all? You are all being extremely selfish and shortsighted. We need this project more than anyone realizes.
