First Camping Weekend for kids with Disabilities at Chatham’s new SCORE Center
(STRIDE Center for Outdoor Recreation & Education)

(Chatham, NY)  STRIDE Adaptive Sports, an organization serving individuals with disabilities for 27 years, successfully hosted their first tent-camping trip this past weekend at our new facility – SCORE Center (STRIDE Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education).
STRIDE Wounded Warrior Olan Aldrich was a  volunteer mentor  to a camper with a similar disability along with other  volunteers and  STRIDE participants. The first campers at the former Girl Scout Camp Sha-Ta-Muk enjoyed a weekend of tent camping, cooking over the fire pit, smores, hikes through the miles of cleared trails, and activities of orienteering treasure hunt, wiffle ball , and lots of camping games, fireside stories and fun! Twenty campers enjoyed the weekend!

The SCORE Center celebrated it’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on May 19th, 2012 with the community, STRIDE families and athletes, and our Wounded Warrior friends and families. With the assistance of US Congressman Chris Gibson, of Kinderhook, NY,  STRIDE  obtained use of a camping property formerly Girl Scout Camp Sha-te-Muc which had been vacant since 2007. SCORE will serve as home to many of STRIDE’s programs and will give us the opportunity to introduce new sporting opportunities for kids with disabilities and Wounded Warriors, such as archery, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing, and paintball biathlons.

STRIDE’s mission is to educate and empower individuals with special needs in life-changing sport and recreation programs to sustain healthy, active and fun lifestyles.
