Magnitude 5.5 earthquake shakes Nevada, California state line

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook an area 20 miles southeast of Mina, Nevada. Residents reported shaking in central California and across Nevada.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck western Nevada early Friday, shaking residents of an area stretching hundreds of square miles in two states, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Friday morning's magnitude 5.5 quake was followed by many aftershocks, according to the USGS's website.

San Bernardino Gunmen Kill at Least 14, Wound 17

California Rain Brings Mudslide Fears, Evacuations

Heavy rain from a powerful Pacific storm swept through parched California on Tuesday, providing some relief from a three-year drought but prompting evacuations in wildfire-scarred communities threatened by mudslides and flooding.
The rain began falling overnight Monday in Northern California, but the heaviest downpours were in Southern California, where recent burns have denuded slopes of the vegetation that helps hold soil in place. Traffic was snarled, and some flights at Los Angeles and San Francisco airports were delayed.
