Midnight Madness to Benefit Wounded Warrior Project – Sunday, Nov. 10

The Maple Hill High School’s boys and girls basketball programs are hosting a Midnight Madness event to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. The event is intended as a way to kick-off the upcoming basketball season and as a way to bring the community together to help raise some money for a worthy cause. The Wounded Warrior Project is celebrating 10 years of service to our

veterans.

Flag Retirement Ceremony at SCORE

(Chatham NY)  Sunday, November 10, 2013 , (day before Veteran’s Day)the Mahikan District of the Boy Scouts of America will hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony at SCORE, formerly Girl Scout Camp Sha-Te-Muc located in Chatham, NY.   The facility, now called STRIDE Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education (SCORE Center)  is used as a retreat for youth with special needs, and Wounded Warriors and their families to enjoy in educational programs including camping, hiking, archery, fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing.

The Boy Scouts of America state:

“When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag, but this does not mean that one should simply drop the entire flag (intact) into a fire.”SCORE was the perfect location for this ceremony, with the availability of outdoor fire pits, and the purpose of the property. The camp is available for veteran’s and Wounded Warriors as a retreat and many of our Warrior programs are held here. Many local Boy Scouts have completed their Eagle Scout projects at the property and local Scout troops have been a significant part of the upgrades and projects on the property since it was acquired by STRIDE. The dignified and elaborate ceremony will be held outside the main lodge with ample parking and handicapped accessible grounds.

The public is welcome to join the Boy Scouts in this ceremonial Flag Retirement Ceremony which will begin promptly at 2:00 PM. SCORE is located at 2182 State Route 203 in Chatham, NY – directly across from the Hudson River Tractor Company. If you have a flag that you’d like to be retired please drop it off to the STRIDE office or bring to the ceremony! Call 518-598-1279 for more details.

STRIDE’s mission is to educate and empower individuals with special needs in life-changing sport and recreation programs to sustain healthy, active and fun lifestyles. STRIDE is a volunteer organization with all sport lessons being taught by highly qualified volunteers, and STRIDE serves our Wounded Warrior community with re-habilitative sport and recreation programs to help them adjust to life and helping them adapt to their permanent injuries that they sustained during recent conflicts overseas.

Supporters of Peter’s Dairy packed Scarnato’s Restaurant Monday night for a unique hors d’oeuvres fundraiser. Community members were all smiles as they socialized, knowing their fun evening was helping the Peter family rebuild their 100-year-old farm. Members of the Peter family – Judge Paul Peter, his wife Jan, their daughter Susan, and their son Chuck and his wife Cathleen, also joined the festivities.

It's true that the Northeast is home to some of the priciest zip codes in the countryand some of the harshest winters ever, but the question of why Americans are abandoning the area specifically for places like Virginia, North Dakota and Texas, leaves some experts perplexed.

According to the New York Post, the exodus is not puzzling at all. In fact, it's been going on for decades.

The movement from high-tax, high-housing-cost states to low-tax, low-housing-cost states has been going on for more than 40 years ... From 1970 to 2010, the population of New York state rose from 18 million to 19 million. In that same period, the population of Texas grew from 11 million to 25 million.

Updated: Tuesday, October 1 2013, 05:42 PM EDT ALBANY – New York State’s health exchanges opened for business on Tuesday and almost immediately, the website that hosts the exchange was crashing and the call-center set-up to field questions was inundated.

I voted "no" tonight on attaching a one-year delay of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to the latest version of a “Continuing Resolution (CR)” because I don’t agree with this approach.

I believe the Senate will reject this CR and we'll be back to square one on Monday, increasing the likelihood of a government shutdown – which I oppose.

From my perspective, the desired end state remains the same - a delay of the Affordable Care Act / Obamacare and a temporary lifting of the sequester - both to January 2015. However, we need a successful strategy to get that implemented and this approach will not do it.

What we should do instead is take the Senate CR and add a simple amendment - overturning the Obama Administration's recent rule providing health care insurance subsidies for Members of Congress and their staff.

The Administration made an exception for Congress to permit these benefits. “Fixing” this problem for Congress before the American people are protected from adverse impacts of the law is wrong.

WTEN Breaking news. Arrests in Stephentown Party

#BREAKING: Police say the first six - out of what are expected to be hundreds of arrests - are being brought to court now facing charges for being ‘key players’ in the large party that took place at former NFL player Brian Holloway's Stephentown home. The Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office says they expect to arrest between 100 and 200 young people in connection to the party - a record for one case in the county.
