East Greenbush sees major apartment proposal for Columbia Turnpike

EAST GREENBUSH – The town Planning Board next week will look at a planned development district for a proposed 300-unit apartment complex, the largest to be proposed in the town in more than a decade, that some consider important to the revitalization of Columbia Turnpike.

The 300 units of luxury apartments and 12,000 square feet of commercial space are proposed by 580 Columbia Turnpike LLC. The 35-acre site is where the Weathervane Restaurant stood for decades before it became derelict and was torn down in June 2016.

“It brings people to a really important part of the turnpike,” said Adam Yagelski, the town director of planning and development.

On an afternoon in mid July an Officer came to work and found an object sitting on the picnic table directly outside the Nassau Police Station. It turned out to be a small rubber duck thought to be a child’s toy but after taking a closer look it was a rubber duck with a police officer hat, a thin blue line flag across the front and a hand written inscription that said “Thank You Nassau PD”. Within feet of the picnic table is the Village Pond, and floating in the pond were over a dozen identical ducks with the same hand written inscription. It is unknown who took the time and effort to make this heartfelt and thoughtful gesture and show of support to the Nassau (and all) Police Department(s) but we would like to Thank You!

The Ducks currently remain in the pond except 2, 1 of which is on display in the Police Station and 1 is in the Village Clerks Office.

The STOP-DWI “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is designed to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes. The campaign lasts through September 7.

SKYLER MISIASZEK BEGINS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD PROJECT

Skyler Misiaszek is beginning her Girl Scout Gold Award Project “PIT STOP”, which has been approved by the Girl Scout Regional Board. 

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the equivalent of Eagle. Though the name has changed over time (it was originally known as the Golden Eaglet of Merit), it has always been the highest accomplishment for Girl Scouts. 

Skyler is starting a Can and Bottle Drive on Monday, August 3 to raise funds to achieve her goal of purchasing at least one set of bleachers for the Maple Hill High School track.

These bleachers will provide a place for elderly and/or physically challenged patrons to sit as they cheer on their Maple Hill Wildcats!

Maple Hill Wildcats or town residents can email Skyler at pkmisiaszek@nycap.rr.com  to arrange for a pick-up. She will go to the person’s house, or place of business, to pick up the cans and bottles and deliver them to the recycling center. Participants can also deliver the cans or bottles themselves to The Bottle & Can Company of East Greenbush at 594 Columba Turnpike in East Greenbush. Be sure to let the receiver know that the items are for “PIT STOP”.

New York schools will open in fall, Cuomo says

ALBANY, NY (WRGB) - New York schools have been given the go ahead to open in the fall.

"They are all authorized to open," Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a conference call Friday.

Districts have been planning for months on how to adapt to new safety guidelines. That includes classroom learning, virtual learning, health screenings, as well as transportation on school buses.

“If any state can do it, this state can do it because we’ve been smart since day one,” Cuomo said. “We can bring the same level of intelligence that we brought to the economic reopening.”

For the districts that have submitted plans, Cuomo said they will be asked to more specifically address three elements of their plans: remote learning, COVID-19 testing for both students and teachers, and contact tracing. Those expanded plans will be submitted to the state and posted on the district websites.

Districts Information for Reopening Schools this Fall

The East Greenbush Central School District, after reviewing guidance from the New York State Education and Health Departments, and discussing plans with the district’s Reopening Task Force throughout the summer, announced its preliminary reopening plan on Monday afternoon which includes a hybrid model of in-person, remote and live virtual instruction. The Schodack Central School District has formed a Reopening Task Force, including four Advisory Committees, which are helping to develop plans to reopen schools in the fall. At last night’s special meeting of the board of education, the Administrative Reopening Task Force presented the preliminary reopening plans for Ichabod Crane Central Schools. The complete Ichabod Crane 2020-2021 Reopening Plan document will be publicly available on this page tomorrow (July 31, 2020)
