Gold Krest Farm suffers ‘100 percent loss’ because of Irene

EAST GREENBUSH — Susan Webb peered at a photo of Gold Krest, the family farm along Route 9J in East Greenbush and Schodack. Not knowing the distance from which the picture had been taken, she had to guess what she was looking at.

"I asked, 'Are those pine trees?'" she recalled. "Then I looked closer. Those were the tassels on the top of corn, sticking out of the water."

The Class of 9/11

The Class of 9/11: How a School Prank Helped Change My Life

The author in his high school years.
Rajiv Srinivasan

On a Tuesday morning during my sophomore year of high school, a few friends and I stumbled into our morning math class in a raucous but musical mood. There was some running joke about us forming a boy band; my dark skin meant I was no doubt going to be the cool minority from the hood. I silently enjoyed how my Indian skin tone allowed me to emulate a range of stereotypes. Our laughter was stifled by the call to order by our instructor, Mr. Phil Sanders.

Hurricane Irene Response - Helping Our Neighbors in Need!

A note from  a neighbor...

After church Sunday at Emmanuel Reformed, we discussed what we could do to help those in nearby areas so drastically affected by Irene. I called the volunteer relief team in Schoharie and it was decided we would bring bag lunches.  We mobilized our church family at the last minute and had them meet us at church Monday evening with the makings of  bag lunches.  Donors were so generous ! Tuesday morning 5 of us "lunch Ladies" and 2 of the men headed out.  No matter what you've seen on TV, the reality of the disaster is so much greater!  The village is in ruins.  What once was a pretty little Main Street with hanging baskets on the light posts, is now a muddy mess of destruction.
