Soak up the sun: Solar farms poised to proliferate in New York state

The concept known as community-distributed generation, or community solar for short, was introduced in New York in late 2015.

Until that point, each of the thousands of solar projects in New York state was operated for the benefit of one specific customer — the party who owned or leased the panels. This was equally true of residential rooftop arrays and large farms built for universities, municipalities and corporations.

Community solar was designed to make photovoltaic electricity available more widely, not just to those residential and business customers who had the ability to install panels on their own property.

Developers bought into the idea.

"We see lots of potential here. We have a ton under development now," said Meaghann Schulte, spokeswoman for GreenSpark Solar.
“What happens when people get worked up is they talk among themselves and they imagine only the worst,” he said. “It’s very hard to shake them. It’s normal. It doesn’t really matter what it is — certain people … just don’t like change.”
Solar farms are the Albany area's new cash crop from the Albany Business Review.
