TROY — Rensselaer County has unveiled a new designated driver program to combat drunken driving this summer.
The latest initiative is "Provide a R.I.D.E. (Rensselaer County Invites Designated Drivers Everyday).
At
26 events across the county this summer, including five ValleyCats home
games, the county STOP-DWI program will have a booth where people can
find information and get help finding a ride home.
On Friday, County Executive Kathleen Jimino, joined Rick Murphy, general manager of the TriCity ValleyCats; Russ Teplitzky, general manager of DeCrescente Distributing; and STOP-DWI Coordinator Jim Gordon to outline the program at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium at the Hudson Valley Community College Campus.
DeCrescente
Distributing is providing soft drinks and paying for taxi cab rides to
ensure people get home safely if they have been drinking.
Murphy said the program fits with the ValleyCats' efforts to provide a safe environment at its baseball games.
People and business owners seeking to participate in the program can call 270-2900 or visit the program's website at http://www.renscoride.com. The events covered by the program will be listed on the website.
