Rensselaer police officer was sentenced to prison

TROY -- A former Rensselaer police officer was sentenced to prison for driving drunk and killing his childhood friend in a crash. Mark Fusco pleaded guilty to first degree vehicular manslaughter Friday afternoon.

Fusco admitted he had a blood alcohol content of .18 or greater when he crashed into a tree in East Greenbush on March 13, 2013. His passenger, Sean Murphy, 22, was killed. Fusco said he couldn’t remember why the two got in the car after taking taxis all night. Murphy’s family said early reports that they had forgotten something in a taxi and were trying to catch up were untrue. Sean’s mother, Coreen, read the only victim impact statement during sentencing. Impaired driving crackdown planned for Super Bowl weekend

State Police say they plan to crack down on impaired driving this Super Bowl weekend. That includes people who text along with those who drink.
It's part of a statewide Stop DWI initiative, which is set to take place from Friday to Monday.

Car/Pedestrian crash under investigation in North Greenbush

NORTH GREENBUSH - Police in North Greenbush are asking for your help as they investigate a hit and run, after a man was hit by a pickup truck with a plow on it.
Police say the 53-year-old victim was walking with traffic along Route 4, when he was slammed from behind.
He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the driver of the truck, 27-year-old Benjamin Bornhorst, a volunteer firefighter, tried to drive away from the scene, after help arrived.
He didn’t get very far, and is now facing DWI and vehicular assault charges.
Police say Bornhorst is also the brother of a man who served time in jail in connection with a fatal drunk driving accident, several years ago.

One dead in fatal DWI crash

NASSAU – One young woman has died and another is in serious condition after their vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a guard rail, flew down an embankment and flipped over on Route 20 early Saturday, state police said.

Rensselaer County unveils DWI prevention initiative

TROY — Rensselaer County has unveiled a new designated driver program to combat drunken driving this summer.
The latest initiative is "Provide a R.I.D.E. (Rensselaer County Invites Designated Drivers Everyday).
At 26 events across the county this summer, including five ValleyCats home games, the county STOP-DWI program will have a booth where people can find information and get help finding a ride home.
