SKYLER MISIASZEK BEGINS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD PROJECT

Maple Hill Sr. High School

Skyler Misiaszek is beginning her Girl Scout Gold Award Project “PIT STOP”, which has been approved by the Girl Scout Regional Board.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the equivalent of Eagle. Though the name has changed over time (it was originally known as the Golden Eaglet of Merit), it has always been the highest accomplishment for Girl Scouts
Skyler is starting a Can and Bottle Drive on Monday, August 3 to raise funds to achieve her goal of purchasing at least one set of bleachers for the Maple Hill High School track.

These bleachers will provide a place for elderly and/or physically challenged patrons to sit as they cheer on their Maple Hill Wildcats!

Maple Hill Wildcats or town residents can email Skyler at pkmisiaszek@nycap.rr.com  to arrange for a pick-up. She will go to the person’s house, or place of business, to pick up the cans and bottles and deliver them to the recycling center. Participants can also deliver the cans or bottles themselves to The Bottle & Can Company of East Greenbush at 594 Columba Turnpike in East Greenbush. Be sure to let the receiver know that the items are for “PIT STOP”.

New York schools will open in fall, Cuomo says

ALBANY, NY (WRGB) - New York schools have been given the go ahead to open in the fall.

"They are all authorized to open," Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a conference call Friday.

 WWNY
Districts have been planning for months on how to adapt to new safety guidelines. That includes classroom learning, virtual learning, health screenings, as well as transportation on school buses.
“If any state can do it, this state can do it because we’ve been smart since day one,” Cuomo said. “We can bring the same level of intelligence that we brought to the economic reopening.”
For the districts that have submitted plans, Cuomo said they will be asked to more specifically address three elements of their plans: remote learning, COVID-19 testing for both students and teachers, and contact tracing. Those expanded plans will be submitted to the state and posted on the district websites.

$1 trillion coronavirus relief bill

Republicans far from agreement on their own $1 trillion coronavirus relief bill

Senate Republicans are having trouble coming to grips with the new coronavirus relief bill outlined by their own party leaders Monday afternoon.

Many want to see changes, still more think the price tag is far too high and all of it is pointing to a major, uphill slog as the party attempts to craft a possible compromise with Democrats -- this as millions of Americans lose crucial benefits in the face of inaction in Washington.

Clashes continue in Portland

Portland, Oregon’s largest city, sits on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood. It’s known for its parks, bridges and bicycle paths, as well as for its eco-friendliness and its microbreweries and coffeehouses. Iconic Washington Park encompasses sites from the formal Japanese Garden to Oregon Zoo and its railway. The city hosts thriving art, theater and music scenes.
Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, said it was the first time he'd been tear-gassed.
It was the 55th straight night of protests in Portland. It wasn't immediately clear if the federal agents knew Wheeler was in the crowd when they used the tear gas.

I can tell you with 100% honesty I saw nothing that provoked this response," Wheeler said to the Times camera. "I'm not afraid but I am pissed off."

Nutshell

House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said: “With this commutation, Trump makes clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else.”

Attorney General William Barr earlier intervened in the case to scale back the Justice Department’s sentencing recommendation, leading four career prosecutors to quit the proceedings.

One of them, Aaron Zelinsky, told lawmakers on June 24 that his supervisor in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington was told to go easy on Stone for political reasons.

Stone was convicted for lying to the House Intelligence Committee about his attempts to contact WikiLeaks, the website that released damaging emails about Trump’s 2016 Democratic election rival Hillary Clinton that U.S. intelligence officials have concluded were stolen by Russian hackers.

The song is a showtune from the 1949 musical South Pacific. At the time, South Pacific received scrutiny for its commentary regarding relationships between different races and ethnic groups. In particular, "You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught" was subject to criticism, judged by some to be too controversial or downright inappropriate for the musical stage. Sung by the character Lieutenant Cable, the song is preceded by a line saying racism is "not born in you! It happens after you’re born..."

Upstate regions won't move to Phase 2 of reopening Friday

Upstate regions won't move to Phase 2 of reopening Friday

Mohawk Valley, North Country believed they could move forward

Cayla Harris

ALBANY – In an 11th-hour decision, the state advised local officials Thursday evening that five regions of upstate New York would not be eligible to move into the second phase of reopening on Friday, angering local leaders who had planned on such a move for days.

As confusion has surrounded the reopening process across the state, the upstate regions that have been in Phase 1 of reopening since May 15 had looked forward to opening hair salons, retail stores, real estate businesses and other services on Friday. But as of Thursday afternoon, the five regions that would be eligible to move forward had not received firm instruction from the state about the rules and regulations for the second phase — or even confirmation that they could move into Phase 2 as planned.

More than half of Barnwell residents have virus

More than half of Barnwell residents have virus
May 6, 2020 by STAFF

HUDSON—The number of positive Covid-19 cases among residents of The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Barnwell, 3230 Church Street, Valatie jumped to 112 Wednesday, May 6, up from 70 just yesterday.

Columbia County Department of Health (DOH) Director Jack Mabb reported in the May 6 county-issued Covid-19 update press release that an additional 42 Barnwell residents have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of infected residents to 112 out of 216. More than half the nursing home residents are currently in the positive category, with more than 20 staff also having tested positive.

All residents and staff are being tested. The State Department of Health sent a team to assist with that process.
“The state has complete authority over all nursing homes,” said Director Mabb in response to recent inquiries regarding what authority the county DOH might have. “We help out where we can because they’re part of our county, but we have no authority over them,” Mr. Mabb said in the release.

STRIDE ADAPTIVE SPORTS “ADAPTS” TO COVID-19 CRISIS WITH VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING AND EVENTS

West Sand Lake, NY – May 1, 2020 – Although virtual can be used to describe anything that exists in effect, but not in fact, it is often used to describe things created in a computer or online world. So how does a regional adaptive sports non-profit survive this pandemic, when one-to-one instruction or team sports are the very essence of what they do for people who have special needs?
As CEO and Founder, Mary Ellen Whitney always has said, “We Adapt.” As Whitney explains, “There have been several obstacles, bumps in the road, and true boundaries that have been in the way of getting the organization to where it is today and since we are accustomed to having to adapt, we will do it one more time.”

Gone fishing!

‘Tis the season. The month of April in New York brings the opening of trout fishing season. In this unique time, fishing seems like a good way to be outside and also far away from other people. Alianna Borgos was fishing with Ariel Soler and her father Angel Borgos. They came down from Defreestville to this beautiful favored fishing spot on the Kinderhook Creek north of Malden Bridge. Angel is a member of Trout Unlimited, but he wasn’t fishing on Monday because with government offices closed, he was unable to get a license for himself. His job was to keep the lines untangled.
