Schodack Central School District may devote entire building to business incubator

Apr 8, 2014, 7:07am EDT UPDATED: Apr 8, 2014, 9:32am EDT

The business incubator at Schodack Central School District has been so successful in its first year that superintendent Robert Horan wants to open an entire building to startup companies.

The district has proposed relocating middle school students in response to declining enrollments, leaving an entire building open to business and community.

A district capital project would relocate middle school students in the Rensselaer County district. Since 2009-10, enrollment has declined by 145 students and projections indicate all students could be housed in the elementary and high school. Moving middle school students into the elementary and high school building would leave the middle school open for business and community space.

Two startups find a home in a Schodack middle school basement

Reporter- The Business Review

The Schodack Central School Districtmoved in its first twostartup companies this fall, and Bob Horan is expanding the reciprocal arrangement.
Horan, Schodack’s superintendent, sees dual benefits to giving free space to the two fledgling energy companies, MICROrganic Technologies and Tumalow.
In exchange for the free space (both companies are miles away from generating revenue yet), the owners will give their time to students, and their expertise to faculty members who will develop curricula and experiments based on the companies’ technologies.
Horan said both companies’ technologies fit well with Schodack’s biotech, semiconductor and energy programs.
“It’s a great trade-off,” said Horan, who is preparing to sign on a third startup. The companies’ first introduction to the school community drew 50 faculty members.

Schodack Central School District's energy savings rewarded with grant

The Schodack Central School District is one of 12 across the state to receive a portion of a $9 million grant as a reward for finding $9 million in energy savings.

School districts across the state were invited to apply for the grant by demonstrating how innovative cost-savings were implemented in their districts. The dozen schools found efficiencies and savings in their district’s operations, in areas such as transportation, maintenance staff, and administrative support. As models, these districts will serve as roadmaps for other districts to follow when containing costs which continue to escalate every year.

“Our education system must become more efficient and direct spending away from the bureaucracy into the classroom,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “The 12 districts we are awarding today stand out as leading examples and will serve as models for other districts across the state.”
Schodack was awarded $298,761 over three years for identifying a total of $331,956 in eligible savings by consolidating and reducing central office administrative responsibilities and positions and installing solar panels.

Kiwanis Christmas Gift to SCSD

The Castleton Schodack Kiwanis Club donated $1,000 in gift cards to each of Schodack Central School Districts three school buildings recently. This donation will help community families in need during the holiday season. Social workers from each school were on hand to accept this generous donation and will be able to identify families to help.

The donated funds come from various fund raisers (chicken barbeques, food sales at summer concerts at the Schodack Town Park) and a very generous donation from a family in the Schodack/Castleton
community.

Kiwanis members would like to thank the community for their support, which allows the organization to give this Christmas donation as well as many other donations throughout the year. The Schodack CSD is very grateful for the Kiwanis Christmas donation and their continued generosity to the community.
