“Responding to Climate Change in the Hudson Valley”

On April 5, there was a spectacularly successful presentation of a clarion call entitled “Responding to Climate Change in Hudson Valley” at the First United Methodist Church in East Greenbush. The event was sponsored by Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) whose executive director, Jim Bonesteel, made the opening remarks and explained what his organization does for the Rensselaer County community.

Then, Mark Lowery of DEC’s Office of Climate Change nearly overwhelmed a spellbound crowd with a Power Point talk full of facts, figures, charts, and illustrations about the dangers of climate change and ways to mitigate it.

There were approximately 200 people in the audience (standing room only), including nearly 30 elected and appointed officials from approximately 25 nearby villages, towns, cities, four counties, and from all political persuasions, including NYS and federal representatives.

The Board of Education on March 8 named Jason Chevrier the next school superintendent.

"Working so closely with Bob for 11 years, he was a friend but also an inspiration and I learned a lot from his leadership. His personality, his energy, his innovation, his passion for education, and his love for family, those are pieces of Bob that I will hold on to, to cherish, and take with me as I move forward into this role," said Mr. Chevrier.

"Major Leagues is the end goal, that's been my dream for as long as I can remember."

When asked about his preference, Schultz answered, "Obviously the quickest way to the Major Leagues is the end goal, that's been my dream for as long as I can remember. I really don't have a preference."

Schultz allowed that he has started and relieved in college and in the professional ranks.

"I think both have their benefits and both have their ups and downs," Schultz said. "Just to be able to help out the team and get up there and show what I've got is -- regardless of what position I'm in, I would love it.

Troy working with Monolith on solar array

Monolith Solar panels expected to save city $100K on electric bill

Monolith Solar is installing solar panels on the Knickerbacker Ice Arena roof as the city aims to turn on its 2.1 megawatt citywide solar system in May.

Workers carried the roughly 4-by-6-foot panels across the roof before gingerly lowering them into the frames that will support them.

"It's great. We're getting into reduced electricity costs and reducing the carbon footprint," Mayor Patrick Madden said.
Troy represents one of the largest customers for Monolith. Its 2.1 megawatts is the largest in the 30 megawatt portfolio.
Madden climbed up on the arena's roof with Monolith's co-presidents, CEO Mark Fobare and COO Steven A. Erby, to inspect the installation.

"I see lots of glass going up," Erby said about the panels.

Monolith Solar is spending more than $4 million to install the system. The city anticipates saving $100,000 annually in electricity costs or about 40 percent of its electricity bill.

Who Can Turn the World on with a Smile?

TV Icon Mary Tyler Moore Dead At 80
"We’ll never forget the woman who “turned the world on with her smile.”
Moore, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1936 and grew up in Los Angeles, rose to international fame starring on the 1960s sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” She later starred on the beloved 1970s sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which is one of the first shows to feature a never-married, working woman as its central character. Moore played single, 30-year-old TV news producer Mary Richards.

The real-life Mary commanded just as much respect. Her namesake show came to fruition in 1970, when she and her former husband Grant Tinker co-founded production company MTM Enterprises and successfully pitched the show to CBS. In its seven-season run, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” held the record for most Emmys won ― 29 ― until “Frasier” broke it in 2002. Huffington Post

John Glenn, Dies at 95

To the America of the 1960s, Mr. Glenn was a clean-cut, good-natured, well-grounded Midwesterner, raised in Presbyterian rectitude, nurtured in patriotism and tested in war, who stepped forward to risk the unknown and succeeded spectacularly, lifting his country’s morale and restoring its self-confidence.

Mr. Glenn was reluctant to talk about himself as a hero. “I figure I’m the same person who grew up in New Concord, Ohio, and went off through the years to participate in a lot of events of importance,” he said in an interview years later. “What got a lot of attention, I think, was the tenuous times we thought we were living in back in the Cold War. I don’t think it was about me. All this would have happened to anyone who happened to be selected for that flight.”

Mr. Glenn did not return to space for a long time. [President]Kennedy thought him too valuable as a hero to risk losing in an accident. So Mr. Glenn resigned from the astronaut corps in 1964, became an executive in private industry and entered politics, serving four full terms as a Democratic senator from Ohio and in 1984 running unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Mr. Glenn began his journey to fame in World War II. In 1939, he enrolled at Muskingum College in his hometown to study chemistry, but he took flying lessons on the side. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, he signed up for the Naval Aviation cadet program and after pilot training opted to join the Marines. As a fighter pilot, he flew 59 combat missions in the Pacific, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses and other decorations.

Thousands of California soldiers forced to repay enlistment bonuses a decade after going to war

Nearly 10,000 soldiers, many of whom served multiple combat tours, have been ordered to repay large enlistment bonuses — and slapped with interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse — after audits revealed widespread overpayments by the California Guard at the height of the wars last decade.
I feel totally betrayed,” said Susan Haley, former Army master sergeant 47, who served 26 years in the Army along with her husband and oldest son, a medic who lost a leg in combat in Afghanistan.
Investigations have determined that lack of oversight allowed for widespread fraud and mismanagement by California Guard officials under pressure to meet enlistment targets.
“People like me just got screwed.”
In Iraq, Van Meter was thrown from an armored vehicle turret — and later awarded a Purple Heart for his combat injuries — after the vehicle detonated a buried roadside bomb.

Just for fun

THE LEGEND OF “STINGY JACK”
People have been making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.”

According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks.
Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.
Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul.

Cuomo insiders charged in federal corruption case
By Chris Bragg and Matthew Hamilton Thursday, September 22, 2016

Federal prosecutors brought corruption charges against top state government insiders and business development executives Thursday, scorching Gov. Andrew Cuomo's hallmark upstate economic initiatives.

The investigation is the most serious corruption crisis to face Cuomo's administration, which since its inception in 2011 has pointed to the words printed on a custom-made pin given to all staffers: performance, integrity and pride. Not only is Percoco, who left the administration in 2015 to take a job as senior vice president for the Madison Square Garden Co., a longtime friend of Cuomo — once described by the governor as "my father's third son" — the case touches on two of his hallmark upstate initiatives: the Buffalo Billion and nanotechnology-driven development.
The complaint alleges that Howe arranged for more than $315,000 in bribe payments to go to Percoco and his wife, Lisa Toscano-Percoco, who is not named in the complaint. Howe and Percoco repeatedly referred to the alleged bribe money as "ziti," the complaint says — a code word for money apparently lifted from an episode of HBO's mafia drama "The Sopranos," Bharara said.

Spike in homeless prompts county’s concern

July 28, 2016 by JEANETTE WOLFBERG

HUDSON—Homelessness and veterans’ issues dominated the Columbia County Board of Supervisors Human Services Committee meeting Wednesday, July 20.

The number of homeless people receiving or waiting for county aid increased from 34 in June to 55 in July, the highest since March, even though the homeless count usually decreases in summer, according to the county Department of Social Services (DSS).
