A high school diploma with the click of the mouse?

Gregg Weinlein is a retired English teacher. He lives in East Greenbush. greggw97@aol.com
Read his article about credit recover program on the opinion page of the Times Union.

East Greenbush Superintendent Angela Nagle asserted credit recovery is used "sparingly." Yet, this very article suggests nearly 10 percent of the graduating class was involved in credit recovery. Is that "sparingly?"
It's certainly suspicious that students cannot pass classes taught by a certified teacher, despite the typical remedial assistance available in schools, yet suddenly, and often in a very short period of "screen" time, earn the failed credit in an online class. Several states are investigating the utilization of online classes for credit recovery and the connection between inflated graduation rates and this industry. Credit recovery accounted for an estimated $500 million of the $2 billion online education industry in 2010.

Springsteen, McCartney silenced by London curfew

London's flamboyant mayor, Boris Johnson, said Sunday that the singers should have been allowed to keep going.

"It sounds to me like an excessively efficacious decision," he told London radio. "You won't get that during the Olympics. If they'd have called me, my answer would have been for them to jam in the name of the Lord!"

...the curfew had been laid down by the authorities "in the interest of the public's health and safety."

Ernest Borgnine Dead: Oscar-Winning Actor Dies At Age 95

Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side, said spokesman Harry Flynn.

With his beefy build and a huge orb of a head that looked hard enough to shatter granite, Borgnine naturally was cast as heavies early on, notably as Sgt. Fatso Judson, the brute who beat Frank Sinatra's character to death in 1953's Pearl Harbor saga "From Here to Eternity."

Democrats Want Romney to Explain Offshore Accounts

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Mitt Romney privately raised millions of dollars from New York's elite on Sunday, as Democrats launched coordinated attacks against the likely Republican presidential nominee, intensifying calls for him to explain offshore bank accounts and release several years of tax returns.
The new push by Obama and his allies comes two days after the release of a lackluster jobs report that said the nation's unemployment rate was stuck at 8.2 percent. Romney has been largely focused on the economy throughout his campaign, an issue that voters overwhelmingly report will be on the top of their minds come Election Day.
