The East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education will begin the budget deliberation process on March 6, with the first of three budget review sessions.
While current projections indicate the district may receive an increase of $266,967 over last year, the district has lost a cumulative $12,059,550 since 2010 through the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA). As the Board formulates a budget for the 2013/2014 school year, the unique challenges brought about by the GEA and the tax cap legislation require a thoughtful discussion on the programs and services our community values most for our students.

COHOES, N.Y. -- Taking home four Oscars Sunday night, Life of Pi surpassed the competition with Ang Lee winning for best director.
A big part of the movie and the wins in cinematography and visual effects can be traced back to the 80,000 square foot space housing Aquatic Development Group in Cohoes which brought to life many of the incredible waves seen in the picture. And that important work did not go unrecognized as a shout out was made during the visual effects acceptance speech Sunday night.
"I knew they were very appreciative," said Ken Ellis, President and CEO of Aquatic Development Group, Inc. "I knew when it was all done, Mr. Lee spoke very highly of our group that put this thing together, but to get a quick mention out there in movie land is pretty neat."
Making waves for waterparks nationwide, Ellis said production teams began reaching out to them for their expertise more than a decade ago. Life of Pi is now the fourth movie that has come calling.
"We knew that a lot of the movie was going to be filmed in this huge test tank that was built over there, and the waves were an important part of it," said Ellis.
Cheaper and easier than filming out in the ocean, the majority of the movie about a boy stranded at sea took place in a two acre pool they designed with several 1800 horsepower wave generators built and shipped out as quickly as possible. The request they received from the production team was quite the challenge.
"A system that can generate six to seven foot waves at many different intervals at the command of the director, and the equipment needs to be built and shipped by December to be making waves by January. So it's about a six month time frame to do it and filming in Taiwan," said Ellis.
While Ellis did not get to witness the win in person, he was able to see the final product on the big screen with his nine-year-old son.
Ellis said no other movie projects are currently in the works for them, but with such an impressive accomplishment, you can bet it won't be the last movie they do.

IN A.D. 393, the ancient Olympic Games were abolished — they had become too corrupt. Wrestling was among the first sports in those ancient Games; wrestling was also included at the start of the modern Olympics, in 1896. Since the vote in Lausanne, I’ve been asked many times: “How can anyone know what 15 members who vote by secret ballot really think?”

Zombie's not welcome in Canada
John Baird On Zombies: Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Says Country Will Never Be 'Safe Haven'
"Under the leadership of this prime minister," he continues, "Canada will never become a safe haven for zombies, ever."
While the comments may seem out of the blue, Canada's National Post notes that the exchange stems from Quebec's plans to stage a hypothetical zombie attack for a security symposium next week. However, the zombie apocalypse has since been scraped in favor of a simulated flood following a barrage of press surrounding the scenario, the Montreal Gazette reports.

Happy Birthday Charles Darwin
Evolution
Today marks Charles Darwin’s 204th birthday. As a naturalist, Charles Darwin had a biology-based curiosity about the world. In his early twenties he embarked on a voyage on the SS Beagle to observe and document the species that he encountered around the world. Throughout this journey he employed his critical thinking skills to help him formulate the Theory of Evolution. His definition of evolution was "descent with modification." However, as science progressed and we discovered DNA, the definition was updated and today it is officially defined as: a change in allele frequencies in a population over time. It's important to note that further advances in science have found data supporting evolution, and so evolution has fulfilled a part of the requirement of a theory, to "stand the test of time." Darwin published his book “On the Origin of Species” in 1859, which has been the flagship of the theory.

Pope Benedict
For only the 2nd time EVER-the Pope hangs up his hat!
ROME (Reuters) - Pope Benedict surprised the world on Monday by saying he no longer had the mental and physical strength to cope with the demands of his ministry, becoming the first pontiff to step down since the Middle Ages and leaving his aides "incredulous".
The 85-year-old German-born Pope, hailed as a hero by conservative Catholics and viewed with suspicion by liberals, said he had noticed that his strength had deteriorated over recent months.

Your Public Schools In Fiscal Peril
Capital District School Communities Join Together for “Your Public Schools in Fiscal Peril – Running Out of Time and Options”
Hundreds of residents from all 47 local school districts will learn about fiscal crisis facing their schools and how they can help
When: Thursday, January 31 from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. (a reception with the public will be held immediately afterwards.)
What: A broad coalition of parents, educators, school board members and business/civic members – representing all 47 public school districts from seven Capital Region counties – will gather for an unprecedented advocacy rally titled "Your Public Schools in Fiscal Peril - Running Out of Time and Options.” This will be the largest (and first) advocacy forum of its kind in the region.
Where: Columbia High School Auditorium (East Greenbush CSD), 962 Luther Road, East Greenbush
Who: Featured Speaker:
· Dr. Rick Timbs, Executive Director, Statewide School Finance Consortium
Superintendent speakers representing rural, suburban and urban school districts:
· Bob Horan, Superintendent, Schodack Central School District
· Dr. Marie Wiles, Superintendent, Guilderland Central School District
· Larry Spring, Superintendent, Schenectady City Schools
Parents, board members, educators, business/civic leaders and elected officials
Details: The evening event will include a presentation by Dr. Rick Timbs, a widely-recognized voice on school finance reform, and leaders of three area school districts, who will illustrate the magnitude of the fiscal crisis facing suburban, rural and urban school districts alike unless meaningful action is taken during the 2013 legislative session. Dr. Timbs will provide analysis of Governor Cuomo’s executive budget and local school superintendents will discuss what it means for their schools.
Attendees will also learn what they, as citizen advocates, can do to help address the lack of equitable funding and mandate relief that stands to shortchange a whole generation of school children and unravel hard-won gains in academic achievement.
The 47 districts – representing 112,336 students – have lost more than $110 million in state funding this year through the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA). State aid has also eroded over the past four years, leading to numerous program reductions/eliminations and staffing cuts.
There also will be press availability with speaker Rick Timbs before the event from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Call Communications Specialist Jason McCord at 937-6456 to schedule interview.

You can make a difference
Petition to deny Stephen Kuber Parole
Target: Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Albany, NY
Sponsored by: Kristin Shaw
A parole hearing is scheduled for the last week in March, 2013, for Stephen Kuber, a man characterized by Supreme Court Justice Joseph Harris as amoral and animalistic, and who murdered Kimberly Jaye Decker on July 10, 1990. On that date, Kuber went to the Altamont home of Ms. Decker where he brutally strangled, raped and then murdered her, after trying multiple methods to do so, including slitting her throat, smashing in her skull and trying to choke her to death with baking soda.
His cold blooded methods coupled with his lack of remorse prove he is not fit to ever be released from prison.
