A welcome surprise!

Father and Daughter Reunited After Tour in Afghanistan

Second grader Natalie Deso received quite a surprise when she boarded the school bus to go home on Monday.

Waiting for her in the front seat was her father, who had just come home from his second tour in Afghanistan.

The stunned 6-year-old stood in disbelief for a moment before rushing to her father as the two embraced.

FRIENDS OF SCHODACK ISALND- On Saturday, Sept. 29th, from 9 am to 4 pm, we're going to be at Schodack Island to do some hands on conservation work and everyone is invited! (Rain Date is Sun, Sept 30th.) This work is being sponsored by a TogetherGreen Grant from Toyota and National Audubon.  We've planned the day in collaboration with Casey Holzworth, NYS Park Biologist.

The Friends of Schodack Island and graduate students from SUNY Albany will be involved, too. Our goal is to cut all oriental bittersweet vines that are 3" and greater in diameter in a 98 acre area around the nesting and roosting sites of cerulean warblers and bald eagles.  As you probably know, bald eagles have been re-established in NYS after a lot of intensive work by DEC.  Cerulean warbler numbers have declined more than 70% since the '60s and they are a species of special concern to Audubon. We will provide lunch, snacks, drinks, and a gift for each participant.  We will also do our best to make the day as rewarding as possible.  There is poison ivy on the island, but not so much in the southern part where we'll be working. www.capitalregionaudubon.org

First man on moon Neil Armstrong dead at 82

Armstrong had his first joyride in a plane at age 6. Growing up in Ohio, he began making model planes and by his early teens had amassed an extensive aviation library. With money earned from odd jobs, he took flying lessons and obtained his pilot's license even before he got a car license.

As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the dusty surface, Armstrong said: "“That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Those words endure as one of the best known quotes in the English language.

Julia Child, who turned the art of French cooking into prime-time television entertainment and brought cassoulet to a casserole culture in the two volumes of her monumental "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," Mrs. Child was not the first dedicated cook to turn cooking into a spectator sport - James Beard preceded her on television in 1945, Dione Lucas in 1948 - but she brought a fresh, breezy approach to daunting material, expressed in her up-the-scales signature signoff, "Bon appétit!"
