Public Notice: organizational meeting

Public notice to Schodack and Nassau residents,
Plans call for the 36-inch, pressurized pipeline to travel east from Wright in an existing Kinder Morgan right of way through Knox, Berne, New Scotland and Bethlehem, before crossing beneath the Hudson River at Schodack, Rensselaer County. TU 3/27
On Thursday, 4/2/15 at 7 PM, I am holding another organizational meeting in regards to opposition to the proposed NED pipeline and compressor station in our towns.

It will be held at the Senior center for the aging on rte 150 on the right just north of the intersection of Rt 20 and 150 if going north. Feel free to invite friends and neighbors. The past meeting we discussed our concerns about the pipeline, a general plan for upcoming public meetings, informing the public and voicing our opposition to our government leaders.

Our last meeting was a success with about 30+ in attendance. This time, we will work on forming smaller committees to address specific tasks, planning our strategy for the upcoming Kinder Morgan meeting April 13 at Green Meadow school 6-8 PM, sign letters to our elected officials and have an informational letter to distribute to Schodack residents. We also need to start planning our public forum on 5/5 /15 and how we will organize help with this meeting.

Thank you,
Lisa and Bill Zimmerman

Government Attacks Small Family Farm in Schenectady County New York

Unexpected Dangers of Farming
by FUSSYlittleBlog

Remember how I said I wanted to get more involved with local farms this year? Well, I guess it pays to be careful with your wishes.

A few weeks ago I met Joshua Rockwood for the first time at Bella Napoli in Latham. He’s the owner of West Wind Acres, a small but growing farm on the edge of Schenectady County in the town of West Charlton. Josh didn’t grow up a farmer. He has a background in construction, but he has gotten into farming for all the right reasons.

It’s a long story, and you can read the whole thing on his blog.

It's Just....another year.

Columbia Science Olympiad team Advances to Nationals

Posted March 16, 2015
Columbia High School’s Science Olympiad Team won the New York State tournament Saturday at LeMoyne College in Syracuse and will advance to the national tournament on May 15 and 16 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Columbia avenged its runner-up finish from last year, knocking off 11-time state champion Fayetteville-Manlius High School of Central New York by seven points.

Columbia defeated 53 schools in 25 different events including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, computers and engineering. Events range from paper and pencil tests, to laboratory activities and construction of devices.

Individual medals are given for the top 10 teams in each event, and these scores are combined to earn an overall team score. Columbia’s team medaled in 18 of the 25 events held on Saturday, and every member of the team won at least one individual medal. Additionally, team members Tim MacDonald, Peter Herrick and Parth Bhide’s gold medal performances qualified them for $14,000 in scholarships.

This is Columbia’s second consecutive trip to the national tournament. In 2014, Columbia finished 16th out of 60 schools and won the award for best new team.

Officials said "certain Iraqi units" have already been denied U.S. military assistance -- including weapons, equipment and training -- because of "credible information in the past" of gross human rights violations.

“It’s tough sorting out good guys and bad guys in a lot of these areas,” said Brennan referring to scenes of “horrific human rights abuses.”
“When we see it, we do bring it to the attention of authorities and we will not work with entities that are engaged in such activities,” the CIA director said.

EDITORIAL: What’s the threat from measles?

 by PARRY TEASDALE

IF YOU HAD MEASLES as a kid you may not remember having them. For most Baby Boomers born before the vaccine was introduced in 1963, measles made you sick and itchy, you stayed home from school until the spots went away and life went on.

Thousands of kids were hospitalized by complications associated with measles–respiratory illnesses and even encephalitis. Some died. Back then my parents wouldn't have told me about that. Would yours?

There were an estimated 4 million measles cases a year in the U.S. before the vaccine. That’s a lot of illness. It was also a lot of people not likely to get measles again because their immune systems had developed antibodies to the virus. But the vaccine meant you could avoid measles instead of surviving them.

This vaccine, now given as part of a cocktail of vaccines against other childhood maladies, transformed measles from a threat to a memory.

Schodack Schools open despite boil water advisory

Boil Water Advisory Due to Village Water Main Break; School Will Still Open on Monday

Due to a water main break in the village, all three school buildings are under a boil water advisory until at least Monday, Feb. 23. This will not prevent schools from opening. Water coolers and cups are already in place in all three buildings. Plastic has been placed over water fountains. Signs directing individuals to avoid drinking tap water have been distributed. Chartwells Food Service is aware as well. “We’re all ready for school on Monday and even for tonight’s basketball game,” said Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Matt LaClair. “We’ve done this before when the village experienced water main breaks in the past.”

In wake of 5-year-old's death, raise concerns about effectiveness of official supervision

Judge Gerard Maney
  Albany Co Family Court
 (Will Waldron / Times Union)
In the months leading up to his death, 5-year-old Kenneth White slept in a La-Z-Boy recliner wedged into a small bedroom in a cluttered trailer he shared with a half-dozen people, 10 cats and five dogs.

He isn't the only Capital Region child to die while under the supervision of child protective services. In one case, an infant was tortured for weeks, his bones broken, his anus torn. Another infant was born with drugs in its system, but was still sent home with a drug-addicted mother.

The reports don't cover all child deaths in the area. [Many] were limited to the reports the state decided, without detailed explanation, to make public.

OLD CHATHAM -- This cat may be down one of its nine lives after he was found frozen to a road in Old Chatham. Little Brook Farm, a nonprofit farm that rescues animals, posted the story of the cat they're calling Valentine on their Facebook page. They say a friend found the cat on the road and thought it was dead. After noticing the cat was still breathing, the friend says he literally peeled the animal off the road and took him to the farm. They warmed him up by the fire and wrapped him in towels. The cat is now recovering and has been given a clean bill of health from the vet. (Photos and videos courtesy of Little Brook Farm)

Why you shouldn't give your doctor your Social Security number

Consumer Reports February 10, 2015 3:00 PM
You’re filling out a pile of forms at the local hospital or when seeing a physician. You jot down your name, address, and insurance information. Then you come to a space for your Social Security number. Should you fill in those precious nine digits? If it’s your doctor or hospital asking, the answer is “No!” But it’s not so simple if you have Medicare or the question comes from your health insurance company.
Here’s what you need to know.
Bob Simon, an award-winning CBS News correspondent whose career spanned nearly 50 years and many major international conflicts, was killed in a car crash in Manhattan on Wednesday. He was 73.
Mr. Simon, who was in his 19th season as a correspondent for “60 Minutes,” won dozens of honors, including 27 Emmy Awards and four Peabody Awards, in a career that dated to the 1960s. He covered many significant news events during the course of that career and, as a war correspondent, was captured by Iraqi forces near the Saudi-Kuwait border during the opening days of the Persian Gulf war in January 1991.

He wrote about that experience in his 1992 memoir,  The title referred to the length of his captivity.  Read more from the NYTimes
